  • Hwasun is adjoining with 7 cities and co unties in South Jeolla Province ; Gokseo ng and Suncheon to the east, Gwangju and Naju to the west, Boseong and Jang heung to the south, and Damyang to the north. Hwasun which is located on the central part of South Jeolla Province has a land area equal to 787 square kilo meters, which consists of 6.5% of the total territory of the South Jeolla Province. It comprises the 73.8% forest land and the 16.5% of farmland. The population of the county is around 74,195 with 1 town and 12 subcounties as of Decem ber, 2005.
  • Hwasun, outstretched over the northeast of the Sobaek Mountain range to the southeast of it, is forming a basin in an oval shape in the middle. Some mountains like Mt. Mudeung and Mt. Anyang are included in the north, and Mt. Gyedang and Mt. Bongmi in the south, all forming a natural bor der line between Gwangju and Jangheung. Jiseok Stream, originated from Mr. Gyedang and Bongmi runs to the southwest and flows into Boseong River.
  • Hwasun is in the most inland area of southern Korea, its climate is classified as southern inland clim ate, and since it consists of more mountainous zones than the other areas nearby, it has big extre mes of temperature and relatively more topographical rainfall.
  • In December 2005, the number of companies registered in Hwasun was 3,865 and 17,941 workers were employed. Most of them are operated at the agricultural and Industrial complexes.
  • Its clean natural environment, which shelters Mt. Mudeung, is also home to breathtaking seasonal scenery. Especially, about 2000 Hwasun Dolmens was designated as World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 1998, and feature historical importance as follows; 1) ‘Collective tight formation in a small area’ 2)‘100-ton upper stone in weight’, 3)‘quarry remains to show the process of building dolmens.’ Also, Hwasun produces water celery and mugwort juice, silkworm, and honey mush.
