  • Damyang belongs to the upper stream of Yeongsan River and is surrounded by Gwangju and five counties; Gwangju and Hwasun in the south, Gokseong in the east, Jangseong in west, and Sunchang in the province of Jeollabuk-do in the north. Damyang, which is located on the northern part of South Jeolla province, has a land area equal to 455.05 square kilometers, which is mainly comprises the 25% of arable land and the 62% of forest land. It consists of 3.8% of South Jeolla province. On the whole Damyang has a north high and south low territory, which is about 17.8km from east to west and 18.8km from south to north. As of August, 2007, it has a population of 50,285 with 20,621 households, and is divided into 1 town and 11 subcounties.
  • As Damyang lies on the plains between the Noryeong and Sobaek Mountain Ranges, it has a high temperature and humidity oceanic climate in the summer. The annual average temperature is 13.6℃ and the temperature range is highly variable the hottest being 26.3℃ in July, and the coldest averaging around 0.0℃ in January. Annual average precipitation amounts to 1,289.6mm. The most precipitation is shown in the summer when the northern Pacific Ocean appears, while the lowest precipitation appears in winter.
  • In December, 2005, Damyang had 2,993 registered companies, which were employing 13,807 workers. Most of companies are operating at the Mujeong and Keumseung agriculture and industry complexes. Also, in 2006 alone, the total trade volume of Damyang stood at US$ 48Million, with US$22Million, which mainly consists of paper and machinery.
  • Damyang is so full of beautiful attractions that the entire town is a recognized tourist destination. Especially, Damyang has been traditionally famous for its bamboo. Mere mentioning the Damyang automatically calls to mind bamboo for many Koreans. The cultivating area of Bamboo is 1,802ha, which is occupying the 25.5% of total cultivation area of Korea. As the bamboo-related industries are fading away attributed by the low-priced imported bamboo products, however, Damyang is seeking another step to develop high value-added products by combining state-of-the-art technologies. Also, Damyang is graced by the nature of superb scenic beauty including Mt. Chuwol, Gamagol, Mt. Geumseong, and Guanbangjerim.
